        Jane's parents have died and left her penniless.she lives with her aunt Mrs Reed and Mrs Reed's children in the north  of England,which she hates.
       In addition Mrs Reed,who is a very unpleasant character,treata Jane so badly that sh become a difficult girl.Mrs Reed then sends her to Lowood Institution,which is a charity school for orphan girls.
       Jane spends long and miserable years there without love or care but she learns a great deal.She eventually becomes a teacher and is able to leave Lowood.Soon after,she finds employment as a governess and moves in Thornfield  Hall,which she finds beautiful.There she teaches Mr Rochester's daughter Adele.
       Adele soon becomes very fond of jane.Mr Rochester,who seems to be an unhappy and unfriendly man,is fascined by jane's intelligence and independence.They fall in love and decide to get married.
       On the eve of the wedding,a dark figure goes into jane's room and tears her wedding veil.Jane is upset but tries to forget the incident.However,during the ceremony a solicitor called Briggs,whom Jane has never met,announces that Mr Rochester is still married to someone else.It is then that jane discovers the identity of a dark figure from the previous night.She is the Mr Rochester's mad wife Bertha,whom he has kept shut away in the attic of his enormous house.
      Distressed,Jane runs away and nearly died.She is saved by a man called St John Rivers and his sisters,who nurse her back to health.They then discover that they are long lost cousins and that Jane has a fortune,which a distant uncle left her when he died.Jane is very grateful to the Rivers and agree to mary St John.
      One night,as the date of wedding approaches,Jane hears a voice calling ger.It is Mr Rochester,calling her telepathically.She returns to Thornfield Hall,which mad Bertha has burn dawn.Mr Rochester has been blinded and badly burnt while trying to save his wife,but she is dead.Jane and Rochester marry and in the last pages of the novel we find that he partly recovers gis sight.
